Clerette Atis was born April 15,1940 in Cabaret, Haiti to the parentage of the late Oracile Ferdinand and Kernizan Valmond. While in Haiti, Clerette completed her schooling and began a profession as a dressmaker.
At an early age, Clerette's dad realized her role as the family’s matriarch. In 1969, Clerette moved to Brooklyn, NY in search of a better life for her and her family. It was there that she worked relentlessly to continue to support her family back home and create a pathway to opportunities for her siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews. While in Brooklyn she would meet her soon to be husband, Jolivert Atis (deceased). The two became married in December of 1971 and together, they had three children: Balanda, Billy and Donnie. Shortly after marriage, they moved from Brooklyn to New Jersey to raise their family.
While in New Jersey, Jolivert and Clerette were one of the first members of Mount Olives Church of God. All the days of her life, Clerette remained committed to her faith and her personal relationship with Christ. She remained active in various church groups including the Dames Missionaires. She made sure that her family participated in ALL church activities so that we would have a strong relationship with God. Even in her spare time, Clerette loved to watch her favorite religious shows like the Word Network, Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN) and especially Joyce Meyer. But she also had another TV ministry which was to help solve the puzzles on A Wheel of Fortune.
Throughout the 70's and 80's, Clerette’s work ethic and drive became very evident as she managed to attend and graduate Wilfred Academy Cosmetology school, work as a certified nursing assistant, operate a clothing retail business and attend Essex County College; while raising 3 children. She loved to go to New York every week and shop for the newest trends and bring them to New Jersey to sale. She also loved to bargain shop at the Englishtown Flea Market for great deals. As an example, Clerette would frequently ‘drag’ her children with her to Englishtown as she went to purchase wholesale goods to be resold in her flea market booth. While the children dreaded the idea of waking up early on a Saturday morning to walk through the dusty, and sometimes muddy fields in search of a good deal (while holding heavy bags), those moments undoubtedly helped to instill work ethics that continue to be evident in her family’s lives today.
In the late 80's, Clerette’s health began to slowly decline and she was no longer able to work and be as active in her community. Despite this, Clerette was always known as someone with a strong spirit who never gave up. Her unrelenting love for her children was displayed in equal but unique ways. With Balanda, her first born, she’d spend every Friday going to New York City on the PATH Train to purchase clothes (and get NY pizza). She’d called Billy, her second child, daily to ask if had eaten until he was 40. And as for Donnie, the baby, he was her sidekick in negotiating deals at the Englishtown Flea Market.
Throughout all of life’s adversities, when asked “How are you doing?”, she would emphatically reply, “I’m blessed, I’m blessed, I’m blessed!” In her last days, she would frequently pray for anyone that came across her path and found comfort in singing her favorite songs, Grande en Fidelite (Great is Thy Faithfulness) and Grace Infinie (Amazing Grace).
On May 22, 2017, Clerette was called to be home with the Lord. Sharing the wonderful memories of her life are:
Her Children: Balanda Atis, Billy Atis and Donnie Atis, Her Grandchildren: Micah Atis, Jade Atis, Jolie Atis, Aaron Atis, Abigail Staco, Olivia Atis, Jethro Joseph, Luther Joseph, Jessica Joseph and Jennifer Joseph, Her Siblings: Arnold Valmond, Louisama Valmond, Genevieve Revangile, Georgette Charles, Lizette Valmond, George Valmond (deceased) and Marie-Carme Valmond (deceased), Her immediate Nephews and Nieces: Ismael Valmont, Alain Valmont, Jason Valmond, Chad Valmond, Rebecca Valmond, Yvane Charles, Balanda Antoine, Jean-Henaud Charles (deceased), Joseph Charles, Franslene Charles, Sylvia Revangile and Joe Revangile and A large extended family: The Atis family (and all of its spellings), The Raymond Family, The Joseph Family and The Valmond Family.
