Bernadette “Dodo” Aly was born in Jérémie, Haiti on August 4, 1931 to parents Lina Jules and Peters Thomas. On her father’s side she had one brother, Jean Robert Joseph. During her childhood, her mother left their hometown of Jérémie to settle in Port-au-Prince. After her mother’s passing, she lost contact with her family and she never had the opportunity to return to Jérémie.
At the tender age of 18, she met the love of her life Gaston Aly in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The couple remained married for 56 years until his untimely death in 2005. Together, they raised 9 children—Marie Lourdes, Nuzette, Yolette, Felder, Simon, Guerlin, Fritz, Woody and their adopted son Bermann Joseph.
Bernadette was an entrepreneur who built her own business as a gifted seamstress in Haiti. She was enthusiastic, outspoken, and compassionate. She spent time at the General Hospital in Haiti, where she cared for those in need. Dodo’s compassion and her peaceful spirit touched every person she encountered.
God’s love carried her through various storms. In one year, she lost two sons and years later, she lost another son, his wife and his two children, in the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Despite these hardships and devastating losses, she persevered. Where others would have faltered, she carried on with grace and humility.
Everyone loved Dodo. She was a wonderful woman who radiated joy and peace. She always offered words of encouragement and her life was a testimony to grace under pressure and faith through adversity.
Dodo is survived by her children Marie Lourdes, Nuzette, Yolette, Fritz, Woody, and Bermann.
Her grandchildren: Saradgine, Bathsheba, Nehemie, Victor, Jonathan, Mardoche, Sasha, Guerby, Olivier, Khelany Anika, David Olivier, Ketia, Dana, Brunel Jr., Emmanuel, and extended family: Gayrleen, Kareen, Jayden and Garlande.
Her great grandchildren: Mardgine, Samar, Lenora, Mathias, Valen, Joshua, Hadassah, Stella, Chizara, Chidi, Chiamaka, Eli, Emma, Journey, Joshua, Ronaldo, Shawn, Calvin and Kaylie.
Today, while our hearts grieve her absence, we celebrate a life well lived. Her legacy lives on in her surviving children and grandchildren - forever manifesting itself in all the lives she has touched.
