William “Billy” Denard was born on October 27, 1959, in Louisville, Alabama, to Rosie B. Freeman and Benjamin Thomas Sr. He was the firstborn of both his mother and father. Raised in Alabama by his grandmother, Rosa Denard, he developed into a beloved man.
When Billy’s mother moved to New Jersey for better opportunities, she sent for him and his sister. She wanted him to have a better education after he struggled in school. In New Jersey, he thrived, attending Franklin Elementary and graduating from Passaic County Vocational High School in 1979.
Billy peacefully passed away on May 7, 2026, leaving a legacy of laughter, love, music, and memories. Known as a “cool brother,” he was always surrounded by friends. His senior yearbook remembered his fun spirit, basketball, school trips, and his saying: “Be cool, brother”—a phrase that summed up his laid-back, funny, caring personality.
He was active in Newark communities such as Columbus Homes, Garden Spires, and Bradley Court, forming lifelong friendships with Lenard, Ronald, and Sandford. Billy served 24 years as a Maintenance and Repairman for the Newark Housing Authority. A skilled handyman, he loved collecting tools and fixing things, always helping others. He enjoyed old-school hip-hop, karate movies, family time, laughter, storytelling, and hosting. His big personality and caring nature made everyone feel welcome. Billy loved his family dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rosie in December 2011 and Benjamin in March 2026.
He leaves behind his partner, Patricia; children, Lakima, Sabrina, Derrick, Billy Jr and Ciera.; grandchildren, Diamond, Skyla, Quadree, Amari, Amira, Jeffrey, Deonly and Shondell; four sisters, four brothers, extended family, friends, and neighbors.
Though sad, we cherish his memories, lessons, and love.
“Be cool, brother.” — William “Billy” Denard
