Ismena Commis was born on September 10, 1925 to Viergina Jean Charles and Icarné Commis in Saut D’eau, Haiti. She was one of six children.  She got married at the age of 19 to Salem Joseph and went on to have a total of 11 children of her own. Ismena was always a hardworking woman and wished to instill the same values within her kids. She worked her life as a cultivator and a merchant.

Ismena was known by many as a very generous person. She loved to give to her community and the people around her. She always wanted to help people in need, giving out coffee or food even if she herself didn’t have a lot. She believed that life was all about sharing and making sure that everyone got something. Because she was always so giving, she ended up always having a lot of friends and acquaintances. Her house was never empty, always full of guests that came to visit.

Ismena came to the United States in 2004 to join her daughter where she would later on apply for her other children to come also. Her biggest hope was to give her children a better life.

Passing on at the age of 96, Ismena is honored as the matriarch of a great and ever-growing family.
