We are here today to celebrate the life of an exceptional man and remember him for everything he meant to each of us. Dr. Jean Leonor Auguste was a much-loved son, husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, friend and great helper to many people. He was a man with strong personality. He has always been creative, energetic, and hardworking. He brought joy and encouragement to everyone around.
Dr. Jean Leonor Auguste was born on June 22, 1949 in Jérémie, Haiti to Emma Francois Auguste (deceased) and Letoit Auguste (also deceased). His siblings are Madeleine Auguste Lombard (deceased), Lenoit Auguste (deceased), Monique Auguste (deceased), Dieuvita Auguste, Lenorq Auguste, and Jean-Gardy Auguste (deceased). He attended his primary classes at Les Frères de l'Instruction Chrétienne and his secondary classes at L’ Institution Saint-Louis de Gonzague en Jérémie. He moved to Port-au-Prince in 1972 and attended Lycée Toussaint Louverture for the second part of his bachelor’s degree and graduated in July 1972. Upon graduation, Leonor attended La Faculté de Medecine et d'Odontologie en Haiti where he studied to become a dental surgeon. In July 1979, he received his master’s in Dentistry where he practiced as a dental surgeon at the National Palace in Haiti. In August 1979, he was baptized as a Seventh-Day Adventist at Auditorium de la Bible. Dr. Jean Leonor Auguste relocated to the United States in October 1981 and resided in Brooklyn, New York where he worked very hard to make a living at an outback store in Hempstead, Long Island. He was very determined and persistent. Leonor didn’t take “no for an answer.” He struggled and fought for life. In December 1986 while working there, he became ill and had a major GI surgery, which he recovered by God’s grace and moved to New Jersey. On July 19, 1987, Leonor married the love of his life, Marie Datide Delva. From there, they had two beautiful children, Jean Leonor Jr. and Leonard Clifford Auguste. He watched his boys grow up and made sure that they received the best education to succeed in life. However, it was a constant battle from sickness to illness and his health continued to fail him. Leonor had several surgeries, saw many doctors — the battle continued but he was very courageous and strong in his search for better health. He started to work again, but this time as a chef. Leonor worked at several places in the past (IHOP in Boonton-Parsippany, Bloomfield, & Houlihan’s Restaurant in Edison). His most recent work was in 1990 where he worked in food service management at the Kintock Group in Newark, NJ. Unfortunately, in 2014, his blood sugar dropped and he passed out while he was working and was taken to the hospital. This forced him into early retirement and he continued to struggle with illness throughout the years. Throughout all the challenges, Leonor enjoyed his leisure time. He loved watching sports, specifically soccer, football and basketball. He liked to take walks, enjoyed reading philosophy books and listening to music. On December 6, 2025, Leonor fell and was rushed to the hospital with a fractured pelvis, which required surgery. This continued the downward spiral of the constant back and forth to the hospital. Leonor endured a lot of pain and suffering during the last few months of his life, but he remained very strong and handled his last moment on Earth with dignity and grace. But as Job, he always trusted in God. Job 1:21 says “Naked I came from my mother’s womb and naked I shall return there. The LORD gives and the LORD takes away. Blessed be the name of the LORD!” Jean Leonor Auguste was a strong fighter and good source of inspiration and encouragement to many around him. He surely has “fought the good fight and finished the race” (2 Tim 4:7).
On May 7, 2026 at 2:49 a.m., Leonor’s pain, suffering, and sorrow ended after a long courageous battle with sickness. Now, he is resting in peace awaiting the Second Coming of our Glorious LORD and Savior, Jesus. We cannot wait for that day! Jean Leonor Auguste is preceded in death by his mother Emma Francois Auguste and his father Letoit Auguste. His aunt Brunette Francois, his uncle Clervil Francois, his cousin Patrick Francois, his sister Madeline Auguste Lombard, his nephew Fred Lombard, his mother-in-law Micheline Bonheur, his nephews Lloyd Codada and Daniel Joseph, his sister-in-law Marie Betty Pierre.
