Jean Nicolas Paul Obituary

Beloved by All

Jean Nicolas Paul was born on February 18, 1936, in Melier, a commune in Leoganes, Haiti. His parents were Joseph Elyze-Vital and Carmene Paul.

Nicolas completed his education in Haiti. He began his great career in the Military as a Coastguard Officer and later in the justice department in Crois-Des- Bouquets, Haiti where he was appointed to the position of Municipal Clerk in 1976 and one year later in 1977, he became a very well-respected judge.  At the age of 40, Jean Nicolas Paul married Micheline Jean. They dated for 4, married for 47, and together for 52 years. They raised 4 children together with love and compassion.

In 1979, Nicolas had the opportunity to travel to Canada and from there he moved to Brooklyn, NY.  His brother Ovide Vital having learned of Nicolas’s party life, encouraged Nicolas to move to New Jersey for a more grounded and productive life. Amongst many things, Nicolas worked as a security officer and a tank ammunition technician at Alliant Tech Systems until his retirement at age of 72, while raising his family in search of the American dream.  Having such a strong work ethic, Nicolas continues to work and found a new passion for driving young kids to school well into his early eighties (80s).  The respect and love between the children and Nicolas were profound. As evident during the holidays, he would receive so many gifts and cards in gratitude that it always surprised us with the impact he had on people and the respect he was given.   Nicolas lived a Christian life, a devoted catholic. You could always find him in his living room watching his mass in his pajamas whenever, he could not go to church in person.

 A Good life

Nicolas loved all sorts of music from classical to Jazz but the Haitian classics, Tropicana and Tabou Combo were his favorites.  In addition, he loved to dance. Those who knew him from the early years to later know this well.  Nicolas and his wife were known as the “showstopper” as they loved to dance Bolero and Kompa (zouk).

Nico, as many of his friends called him always had his home open.  If he was not hosting you for a few years as a new incoming migrant, you were there as a visitor on the weekends.  Soon you would hear many stories and come to understand the breadth and depth of the man we called dad.  He loved stories of the old days and his civil work but, please never discuss politic with Nico, you would never win that battle.

Nicolas was a kind, compassionate man You were always welcomed in his home with a drink and food no matter who you were or where you came from.  He was a kind, generous and respectable man who will live forever in our hearts.  Proud of his appearance, he always looked the part of a classic gentleman.  Micheline, his beloved wife, and our loving mother always helped him by making sure everything was diligently picked and chosen. This teamwork made him always look like the successful man he was. Nicolas and his wife were a partnership of success that made sure everyone in their lives was taken care of with full hearts and stomachs. It was a good life indeed.  Admired and loved by everyone who knew him, a glorious man!  Nicolas is well known as “The Judge”, Nico, Da, Pa, Uncle Nico, Pere Nico.

In the last stage of his life, he suffered from health ailments. On his birthday February 18, he fell gravely ill, and he passed away on February 27 at the age of 87.  His parents, 6 brothers, 2 sisters preceded him in death.  Surviving his brothers Martelly, Jean-Baptiste, Danielle, Herault, Marc Gautier, and His sisters Katherine, Pauline, Bernadette, and Antonine.  He leaves behind to cherish and celebrate his life, his loving wife Micheline. His children Nadine, Jacques, Junior, Rivelino and wife Nerlande Fremont.  His Granddaughters Nia, Chloe and Reeva and his many nieces, nephews, cousins, and loving friends.

Micheline, Nadine, Jacques, Rivelino, and Jean Junior wish to take this opportunity to express our deepest and sincerest gratitude for the many expressions of sympathy, concern, love, and prayers from everyone.  We especially send our love to our family who has always stood by us and shown their love and support.  And we thank you all who have joined us to celebrate the great life of Jean Nicolas Paul.
