Jean Yves Belony Obituary

Jean Yves Belony lived a life rich in love, resilience, and devotion to those around him. Born as the youngest child to Christiane Belony and Aldes Odigene, he grew up in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, surrounded by a large and loving family. His siblings, Fritzner Jean, Ricles Jean, Fernand Jean, Jacqueline Joseph, Emile Jean Poix, Etzer Jean Poix, and Yvette Auguste, all shared a close bond that nurtured a spirit of unity and cooperation within their family.

He began his education at Ecole Nationale Charlotin Marcadieu in Croix-des-Bouquets, where he cultivated a love for learning and demonstrated his characteristic curiosity and determination. His academic journey continued at Lycée Alexandre Pétion in Port-au-Prince, one of the most prestigious secondary schools in Haiti. It was his elder brother, Emile, who assumed the responsibility of caring for him and financing his education in its entirety.

Baptized at Notre Dame du Rosaire de la Croix-des-Bouquets and later receiving his first communion at Croix-des-Missions, my father’s early religious life was rooted in Catholic traditions. However, his spiritual journey evolved, and he eventually embraced Protestantism, finding a renewed sense of faith and purpose in this conversion. In June 2010, he took his faith further by becoming a pastor, dedicating himself to guiding others spiritually and spreading the word of God. Despite life’s challenges, including the disappointment of a denied application to Canada, he persevered with resilience and hope.

In 1981, my father married the love of his life, Marie Dena Auguste. Two years later, in 1983, he embarked on a new chapter by immigrating to the United States, where he began building a life for his family. Their first home was a humble apartment at 166 Ellis Avenue in Irvington, New Jersey. His journey in America began with hard work and dedication, starting with a job at Chueng Chinese Food in Newark and later as a factory worker at Midland Paper. Together, he and Marie raised three children: Yvene, Ivelyse, and Evans, instilling in them the values of faith, love, and perseverance. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Raynaldo, Nikeson, Marvin, Stevenson, Jaiden, Emilie, Alayna, and Laury, who carry forward the lessons and love he imparted.
