Joseph “D’Jo” Thomas was born on October 10, 1953 in St. Marc, Haiti to the late Lissa Thomas and Miracienne St. Elien. His time in Haiti gave him a lot of experience operating mechanical tractors. In his spare time, he played drums for Les Formidables De Saint Marc.
Joseph left his beloved country at 27 and moved to the United States for better opportunities. He continued to pursue his passion for mechanics by obtaining a certification in welding. Joseph was determined to make a better life for himself.
He met his wife, Marie Thomas, in 1988 while living in Nyack, New York. They moved to New Jersey and married in 1993. Joseph worked hard to support his wife and 2 children.
He was fondly called "Ti Tom" by those who knew him. Joseph's love of music was evident in his daily life, as he was often heard humming or singing along to his favorite tunes. He is involved with the Church of God Tabernacle of the Lord in Newark, New Jersey. Despite his illness, his strong spirit was evident in his approach to life.
He is survived by his wife Marie Thomas, his two children, Carl Thomas and his wife Morgan Thomas, Dr. Kimberly Derezil and her husband Jean Derezil, and 5 grandchildren: Jordyn Derezil, Karter Derezil, Kairo Derezil, Chance Thomas, and Maxwell Thomas.
