Marie Janine Etienne was born in Aux Cayes, Haiti, to Jean Etienne and Polencia Louis. She grew up in a close-knit family and carried with her the warmth and resilience that would shape her life and the lives of those around her for decades.
Relocating to Newark, New Jersey, Marie built a home and a bridge between two cultures. She greeted each day with grace and a steadfast commitment to family, work, and faith. Her strength was most evident in the devotion she showed to her children and grandchildren, whom she loved deeply and supported in every possible way.
Marie’s family remembers her as a loving mother, sister, and aunt—someone who led with kindness, offered guidance with patience, and celebrated every milestone with joy. She cherished family gatherings, enjoyed sharing stories, and imparted values of integrity, compassion, and perseverance.
In her free time, Marie found comfort in simple pleasures and the rituals that connected her to her Haitian roots and her New Jersey home. Her legacy lives on in the lives of Marie Winette, Gina, Antoine, Bertin, and Jerry, along with her sister Anne Marie and a wide circle of relatives and friends who carry forward her memory. Her family continues to honor her memory by supporting each other and cherishing the values she embodied.
