Marie Ketlie Leveque Obituary

Today, we are united in this space to say our final goodbyes to a person we cherish, who has made a unique mark in our lives in her own way. Marie Ketlie Levêque was a conservative, disciplined, and elegant woman, who valued the lives of those around her. She was a mother, a grandmother, a sister, a friend, a reliable companion, a confidante, and a leader —a versatile individual with so much love to give. Marie was the root of our family tree. Born on September 20th, 1939, in Petit-Goave, Haiti, to Marie Elizabeth Lina Levêque and Paul Coriolan, she was the eldest of five children. Her siblings are Roger Dugué, Marie-Garline Levêque, Paule Levêque, and Lise Levêque. She attended kindergarten at Maria Delbeau and primary school at Notre Dame de la Sagesse. Marie went on to high school at Lycée Faustin Soulouque. She acquired an embroidery certification in 1959 and spent most of her career as an embroiderer. From 1983 to 1992, Marie worked for the government in the finance department and retired at the age of 62. She had four children with her deceased partner, Antoine Joseph Michel Sanon; their children are Marie Naderge Sanon, Marie Antoine Carine Beaubrun, Marie Luna Sanon, and Pierre Michel Sanon. Marie Luna and Pierre Michel passed away relatively young, and the remaining two were left behind to grieve in great sadness. Marie was a success story. Since 1996, she struggled with her health but continued to stay in prayer and of service to others. Many wouldn't know of Marie's struggles as she always carried herself as an exemplary woman. She always said, "Others don't need to know your everyday problems, as they also have struggles. It's always best to mind your own business." She never complained about the challenges she encountered in life. Marie focused on maintaining her and her family's happiness and moving forward. She remained poised and silent in all situations and offered advice and guidance to those who reached out to her. Marie lived a life dedicated to God, her family, and her community. She closely assisted her mother in caring for her younger siblings. Most of her siblings recognize her as "mom" and praise her for her love and sacrifices throughout the years. She shared a close bond with them, especially with her younger sisters, Lise and Marie-Garline Levêque. If mothers in her community couldn't care for their children, Marie took them under her wing, sheltered them, and provided for them as her own. Marie enjoyed the yearly festivities. She often spoke of Christmas. The idea of having a Christmas tree, the decorations, the laughs, and the day-to-day celebrations brought her immense joy. She was especially overjoyed when watching her children smile back at her when opening presents. She was also proud of "15 Août," the Petit-Goave yearly celebration every August 15th. Marie loved cooking for her family in her early years and directing the kitchen as she grew older. Her sister Lise was often a victim of her ploys, when she was adamant about which seasonings worked best with specific dishes. At our home, she was well-known for her pikliz and steamed fish. Her cooking had depth, balanced with fantastic flavor. Marie was adamant about her values and instilled confidence in her children. She taught them to believe and follow their will. Marie often warned of cautiousness and awareness to prevent unwanted circumstances. She frequently said, "Those who advance in life cautiously and slowly will surely acquire success. Do not compare yourself to others. You're where you're supposed to be." Marie Ketlie Levêque, a robust, elegant, and sensible woman with values and standards, will be deeply missed. We give our thanks to you who have come near and far to offer your goodbyes to Marie Ketlie Levêque on her departure to eternity. May God provide her a space at his table because, as of today, she is no longer a connivance. Go, Manmie Kêkête, and rest in peace. May the earth be light on your rest.
