Nigel Martin Philip-Rousseau, a beloved son, brother, husband, and father, went home to
be with the Lord on October 23rd, 2021, in the evening at Holy Name Hospital, Teaneck,
NJ. Nigel was the son of Isambert Rousseau and Thelma Philip, both deceased. He was born on August
5th, 1957, in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago, where he was raised and educated. He enjoyed
playing the steel Pan and soccer. Nigel eventually moved to the United States, where he graduated
from LaSalle Academy. Nigel then worked at Western Electric Co in Newark N.J. where
he would soon meet his wife Sandra Gray on a train ride home.
Nigel was led to the Lord by Horace Young after attending Grace Gospel Chapel in Jersey
City, NJ, on a Tuesday night prayer meeting. He was baptized at Bethany Chapel,
Brooklyn, NY. Nigel was a member of Grace Gospel Chapel, where he fellowshipped and
served for over 15 years. He served in the Church Choir, Men’s Missionary Group, and in
the local community. He was also an itinerant speaker at Grace Gospel Chapel, Jersey City
and Brighton Avenue Bible Chapel.
Nigel had many hobbies, he had immense joy in uplifting others by sending daily Bible
verses whether through social media or text message. He enjoyed planting, camping, scuba diving, art,
photography he also enjoyed watching Movies. Nigel had a passion and love for music, especially Jazz,
Gospel, and Calypso. His favorite sport Teams included the New York Knicks, New York Jets, the New
York Mets. He also enjoyed F-1 car racing.
Nigel had an interest in the Medical Field. He began working at Newark Beth Israel Medical
Center as a Senior Cardiovascular Technician from 1986-1993. He pursued a career to
become a Physician Assistant. He was a graduate of The City University of New York and
The Harlem Hospital P.A. Program at The City College.
Upon graduation, he worked doing what he loved as a Physician Assistant for over 20
years. Nigel took immense pride in his work and took the time in establishing and
maintaining positive relationships with patients, families, peers; and other health care
professionals, as well the community at large. He passionately believed that patient
education was an essential part of patient care so he would always take the time to ensure
his patients left with a better understanding and of course with an “encouraging Word”.
Nigel was a caring, loving, husband and father. He married Sandra Gray on June 18th,
1983, and later remarried on October 14th, 2006. Nigel is survived by his wife Sandra
Philip-Rousseau; his son Jean-Marc Philip-Rousseau and wife, Magnolita Philip-Rousseau;
his son Andre Philip-Rousseau and his wife Deborah Philip-Rousseau; his daughter Martine
Johnson and her husband Jimmie Johnson; his grandchildren DJ Ortiz, Mason Johnson,
Carson Johnson, and Havyn Grace Philip-Rousseau; his sister Nicole Rousseau; his niece,
Amaya Rousseau; his brothers Ray Rousseau and Patrick Rousseau; his sister Yvette
Rousseau; and his many cousins: Roseanne Williams, Edmund Armstrong, Dexter Armstrong,
Darrel Armstrong, Laurence Armstrong, Charlene Armstrong, Martin Armstrong, Nikola
Moreno, Janine Jobity, Ken Jobity, Martina Mayer, Pauline Philip, Glen Philip and Christian
Taylor.
