Obed Prinvil was born on November 2, 1946 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti to Nevoyon and Dasiela Prinvil. Obed graduated from Lycee Toussaint Louverture in 1962 and a few years afterwards, he immigrated to the United States and resided in Newark, New Jersey.
In between raising a young family, working, and learning the English language, Obed earned an Associate of Science degree in Biology from Essex County College in 1976 and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Zoology from Rutgers University in 1978. Obed also pursued a Master of Science degree from Seton Hall University.
Obed worked in management positions with Alpha Wire, Fisher Scientific, and Intelligent Electronics in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Warrenton, Virginia and Denver, Colorado. In 1998, Obed began his career in the city of East Orange and served as the city’s Deputy Director of Property Maintenance and Revitalization. Mayor Robert Bowser appointed Obed to the position of Director of Property Maintenance and Revitalization in 2006 and he served in that role until his retirement in 2014.
Obed was very active in the Haitian community in New Jersey. Obed was a founding member and executive director of the Caribbean Haitian Council (CAHACO) and served on numerous boards and commissions. Obed was also an active parishioner at Our Lady Help of Christians in East Orange.
Obed is survived by his wife, Andrelle Boisrond; his four sons, Frantz Prinvil (daughter in law, Mamoute Prinvil), Jeffrey Prinvil, Arthur Prinvil, and Don Jesse Toussaint (daughter in law Sue-Lin Toussaint); his grandchildren, Marly Prinvil, Josiah Prinvil, Elijah Prinvil, Julia Toussaint, and Ellis Toussaint.; his five siblings: Jenel Prinvil, Nella Prinvil , Meline Prinvil, Jenie Prinvil, and Betty Prinvil; his former wife, Mimose Bienvenue; and extended family members in Haiti, Canada, France, and the United States.
