Pastor Elveus Sylvain was born on May 17, 1957, in Petit Jardin, L’estere, Haiti to Silveus Sylvain and Deuiquisel Jean-Noel, as the youngest of six siblings. He completed his primary education at Francois Volny Institution in Gonaives and received his secondary education from College Mixte Lamartiniere in Port au Prince.
Following his graduation in July 1980, Pastor Sylvain relocated to the United States, initially residing in Florida before settling in New Jersey. Early in his career, he actively participated in church life in Haiti and joined E’glise Baptiste de la Nouvelle Jerusalem (EBNJ) in December 1980 after moving stateside. He married Christine Ceus in May 1984, and together they raised four children while residing primarily in Union, NJ.
Throughout his clerical journey, Pastor Sylvain held several positions, including Ambassador Class Monitor, Sunday School Superintendent, General Secretary of the Committee, and Youth President. He acquired a certificate in theology from the Evangelical School of the Bible, an associate degree and bachelor’s degree from Philadelphia Biblical University and earned a Master of Divinity from Cairn University. His legacy at EBNJ extended from its original location on 18th Ave in Newark, NJ to Nye Ave in Irvington, NJ. Ordained as Pastor’s Assistant in August 1986, he served in various leadership roles for nearly three decades, eventually becoming titular pastor until March 2025.
Alongside his pastoral responsibilities, Pastor Sylvain balanced family life and professional commitments. Licensed as a mechanic and experienced as a tradesman, he began working at L’Oreal in 1998 as an engineering technician and progressed to Manager at L’Oreal USA Inc. He retired from L’Oreal in 2017 and subsequently pursued a career in real estate. Pastor Sylvain contributed extensively as a mentor and counselor to youth and EBNJ members, exemplifying commitment to both his family and vocation.
Pastor Sylvain emphasized lifelong growth, viewing himself as "a sinner saved by grace, sanctified and purified by the blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ." He approached faith with dedication, conducting himself with leadership, wisdom, and compassion. Through his work, Pastor Sylvain assisted many individuals in their spiritual journeys.
Pastor Elveus Sylvain is survived by his wife Christine, children Malherbe E., McGregor J., Jerry J., Erdine, daughters-in-law Stacy and Fedna, grandchildren Feyemi, Synia, Ahmir, Titus, Savannah, and Avery, and his siblings Marcel Ceus, Sylvanna Sylvain, and Comere Sylvain.
