Perette Julney

Née le 22 février 1946, Perette fut la deuxième fille de Hyvron Julney et la première issue de l’union avec Aline Henri. Elle effectua ses études primaires à l’Institut Georges Angus de Saint-Marc, où elle obtint son certificat d’études primaires. Élève brillante au Lycée Sténio Vincent de Saint-Marc, elle dut interrompre ses études secondaires en 1963.

En 1970, elle quitta le cocon familial pour s’installer à Port-au-Prince. Elle y travailla au Parc Industriel de la capitale jusqu’à la mort de sa grande sœur, Carmène, qui l’avait rejointe entre-temps. De retour à Saint-Marc vers l'été 1974, elle épousa Marc-André Jean l'année suivante.  De cette union naquirent Marie Françoise et Hyvron Jean.

En 1979, Perette fut nommée institutrice à l’école primaire spéciale. Cependant, grâce à l’appui de son père qui prit en charge les frais liés à l’obtention de son visa américain, elle quitta sa terre natale en 1980 pour s’établir aux États-Unis. Laissant derrière elle un mari et trois enfants, elle comprit rapidement qu’elle devrait cumuler plusieurs emplois pour subvenir à ses besoins et à ceux de sa famille restée en Haïti.

En 1986, après six longues années de nostalgie, elle retourna en Haïti pour revoir ses enfants. Infatigable et déterminée, elle réalisa l’un de ses plus grands rêves en faisant venir ses enfants aux États-Unis. Perette tenait à offrir un amour inconditionnel à ses enfants, veillant à ce qu’ils puissent jouir d’un mieux-être que celui qu’elle avait connu.

Le stress et les déceptions de la vie lui causèrent de lourdes maladies, le diabète de type 2 en 1992, la bradycardie (un rythme cardiaque plus lent que la normale),  en 2005, puis l’insuffisance rénale en 2013. Elle affronta chacune de ces complications avec une résilience remarquable, sans jamais trop se plaindre.

Comme une brebis égarée en quête de son troupeau, elle retourna fréquenter l’Église Adventiste du 7e Jour, où elle avait reçu le baptême en 1996, s’intégrant naturellement à cette communauté spirituelle. En 2005, en raison de ses problèmes de bradycardie, elle prit une retraite anticipée et s’installa à Saint-Marc, ne se rendant ultérieurement aux États-Unis que pour des contrôles médicaux semestriels. Toutefois, dès 2013, son insuffisance rénale l’obligea à prolonger son séjour aux États-Unis, où elle demeura jusqu’en 2018, année au cours de laquelle elle subit une greffe rénale.

Sa générosité était légendaire. Toujours prête à tendre la main à ceux qui en avaient besoin, elle partageait sans réserve son argent, sa nourriture et même son logement. Qu’il s’agisse d’un orphelin ou d’un enfant privé d’éducation, Perette veillait avec amour à ce que chacun reçoive le soutien nécessaire.

Elle était une mélomane qui cultivait un goût raffiné pour les douces mélodies et les chansonnettes françaises. Bien que son corps fût marqué par le temps, son esprit demeurait vif ; à 79 ans, elle récitait encore avec émotion « Les Plaintes de Toussaint Louverture au Fort de Joux ».

Le départ de Perette a laissé un vide profond dans sa famille et au sein de la communauté. Mais nous nous consolons à la pensée qu’elle est décédée paisiblement, espérant revoir son Sauveur lors de la première résurrection des saints. Elle laisse dans le deuil :

Born on February 22, 1946, Perette was the second daughter of Hyvron Julney and the first born to Aline Henri. She completed her primary education at the Georges Angus Institute in Saint-Marc, where she obtained her primary school certificate. A promising student at the Sténio Vincent High School in Saint-Marc, she had to discontinue her secondary studies in 1963.

In 1970, she left her family home and moved to Port-au-Prince. There, she worked at the Industrial Park of the capital until the death of her older sister, Carmène, who had joined her during that time. Perette returned to Saint-Marc around the summer of 1974 and, the following summer, she married Marc-André Jean. From their union, Marie Françoise and Hyvron Jean were born.

In 1979, Perette was appointed as a teacher at a special primary school. However, with the support of her father—who helped her obtain an American visa—she left her homeland in 1980 to settle in the United States. Leaving behind a husband and three children, she quickly realized that she must work multiple jobs to support both herself and her family back in Haiti.

In 1986, after six long years of longing, she returned to Haiti to see her children. Tireless and determined, she achieved one of her greatest dreams by bringing her children to the United States. Perette was devoted to offering unconditional love to her children, ensuring that they experienced a better life than the one she had known.

Stress and disappointments in life eventually took their toll on her health. She developed type 2 diabetes in 1992, bradycardia in 2005, and later, in 2013, chronic kidney failure. She faced each of these complications with remarkable resilience, never allowing herself to be overcome by complaints.

Like a lost sheep searching for her flock, she resumed her involvement with the Seventh-day Adventist Church—the community where she had received baptism in 1996—and integrated naturally into this spiritual family. In 2005, due to her bradycardia, she took early retirement and moved back to Saint-Marc, only traveling to the United States for biannual medical appointments. However, in 2013, her kidney failure necessitated a prolonged stay in the United States, where she remained until 2018, the year she underwent a kidney transplant.

Her generosity was legendary. Always ready to lend a helping hand, she shared her money, food, and even her home without reservation. Whether it was an orphan or a child unable to attend school, Perette ensured that everyone received the support they needed.

A passionate lover of music, she had a refined taste for gentle melodies and French songs. Although her body aged, her mind remained sharp; even at 79, she could still recite with emotion “Les Plaintes de Toussaint Louverture au Fort de Joux.”

Perette’s passing has left a profound void on both her family and the community. We find comfort in believing she passed away peacefully, with faith in Jesus and hope for His return for the first resurrection of the saints.
