In Loving Memory of Starling Darwin Thermitus

(April 15, 2005 – May 18, 2025)

Starling Darwin Thermitus was born in Desdunes, Haiti, in 2005 a gentle, kind soul whose quiet strength left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. From a young age, Starling stood out not because he was loud, but because his heart was big. He didn’t talk much, but his smile said everything. He had a calming presence, a soft way of showing love, and a heart always open to help others no matter who they were or what they needed.

He grew up in Haiti, where he began his education and built his values on family, humility, and kindness. In 2018, he moved to Gonaïves to continue his secondary studies, showing determination and dedication to his future. In April 2023, Starling came to the United States, full of hope, dreams, strength, and gratitude, ready to build a new chapter in his life. But just two years later, in May 2025, those dreams were suddenly interrupted. Starling passed away shortly before his high school graduation, leaving behind a wave of sorrow, but also endless love and memories that will never fade.

Starling loved going to the gym, watching movies and series, and playing video games. But more than anything, he loved his family. He deeply cherished every moment spent with his father, Wilforce Thermitus; his younger brother, Winston Shakespeare Thermitus; his aunts, Krettie Glaude Pierre, Firlande Raymond, and Martha Piercing; his uncle, Phillipesson; his grandparents, Phillipe Pierre Louis and Louisinne Joseph; and all the others who were lucky enough to be part of his life. Even if their names aren’t listed, their importance is deeply felt.

He didn’t live for attention or praise. He lived to bring peace, to protect those he loved, and to make people feel seen, safe, and cared for. His kindness was quiet but powerful. He gave joy freely, helped without being asked, and loved without condition.

And so, we remember him not only for the life he lived but for the love he gave.

In his memory, we hold tightly to a message he lived by, without ever needing to say it aloud:

"Spend time with the people you love. Truly see them. Cherish them. Because life doesn’t wait. You never know when a moment will be your last so make it matter. Say ‘I love you.’ Forgive faster. Hug longer. Laugh harder. And never take a single moment for granted. We only have one life so live it, and love fully."

Starling, you were a light. And even though you’re gone, your light still shines in all of us.

Li te gen yon prezans ki bay lapè, yon jan dous pou montre lanmou, e li te toujou pare pou ede nenpòt moun, san okenn kondisyon.

Li te grandi an Ayiti kote li te kòmanse lekòl epi bati valè li sou fanmi, imilite, ak lanmou pou lòt moun. An 2018, li te deplase ale Gonaïv pou kontinye lekòl segondè li, avèk detèminasyon ak espwa pou lavni. An Avril 2023, li te vini Ozetazini pou kòmanse yon nouvo chapit. Malerezman, an Me 2025, jis anvan li diplome, rèv li yo te vin koupe twò vit. Li kite dèyè anpil tristès, men tou li kite lanmou san limit ak bèl souvni ki pap janm efase.

Starling te renmen ale jimnastik, gade fim ak seri, epi jwe jwèt videyo. Men plis pase sa, li te renmen fanmi li anpil. Li te apresye chak moman li te pase ak papa li, Wilforce Thermitus; frè li, Winston Shakespeare Thermitus; matant li yo: Krettie Glaude Pierre, Firlande Raymond, ak Martha Piercing; tonton li Phillipesson; granparan li yo: Phillipe Pierre Louis ak Louisinne Joseph; epi tout lòt moun ki te gen chans fè pati lavi li. Li pa t viv pou glwa oswa remèsiman. Li te viv pou mete lapè, pwoteje fanmi li, e fè lòt moun santi yo enpòtan, an sekirite, e renmen. Jantiyès li te trankil men li te gen anpil fòs. Li te bay kè kontan san li pa te oblije. Li te ede san yo pa mande li. Li te renmen san limit.
