Valcius Vastay Obituary

On Tuesday, June 23, 2020, Valcius Vastey, loving husband and father, was called home to be with the Lord at age 78.

Valcius was born on April 3, 1942 in Duclos, Haiti to Altida (Née Monace) Vastey and Valcius Vastey, who were farmers and business entrepreneurs.  He began his childhood education in Gonaives, went to Port-Au-Prince for high school.  He pursued a degree in Civil Engineering, however that was cut short due to a prolonged foot illness.  However, he continued to have a strong influence in the community and provided guidance to the family’s flourishing business. He met his lifelong partner, his wife Erzulia (Née Gabriel) Vastey in 1964.  He then migrated to the US in 1970.  They raised three children Shella Vastey-Jeanty (Anel), Dr. Gardy Vastey (Victoria), and Vasthi Vastey-Debrosse (Emmanuel).

Valcius Vastey lived a purposeful life.  He was hardworking and put his full commitment in whatever line of work he pursued, which included working as a NYC cab driver for nearly 2 decades.  He was very generous and enjoyed spending time with friends and family on the weekends.  As a devout Catholic, he attended Sunday mass regularly with his family at Holy Spirit and Our Lady Help of Christians in East Orange.  His hobbies included vegetable gardening and as an avid music lover, his favorite band was Tropicana, American singer Lionel Richie, and various French singers to name a few such as Dalida, Edith Piaf, Charles Aznavour and Mireille Mathieu.  He was well known for his thoughtful advice, kindness, infectious laugh, and compassionate spirit.  His greatest enthusiasm and glee came from any discussion on Haiti, where he later retired to in a home that he built with his wife.

Valcius is preceded in death by his mother, Altida, and his father, Valcius, his two sisters Marie Immaculat Vastey-Vital and Felicite Vastey-Falaise, and his brother Murat Vastey.

Valcius is survived by his wife, his three children, eight grandchildren: Seide Val Jeanty, Bryce Myles Vastey, Olivia Gabriel Vastey, Tiger Chisom Ehieze, Julian Ikenna Val Ehieze, Abigail Vastey, Annabelle Vastey, Ian Valcius Debrosse, and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2020 at Holy Spirit and Our Lady Help of Christians at 10am.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Valcius Vastey’s name to Holy Spirit and Our Lady Help of Christians Church,   17 North Clinton Street, East Orange, New Jersey 07017.
