As we often called you , Marie, means "beloved" or "the one who elevates" in Hebrew. It is associated with compassion and unconditional love. Throughout your life, you loved your family with a deep, sincere, and unwavering love. You always wanted them to move forward, to thrive, to succeed with dignity and honesty. That was your dearest wish. Your heart overflowed with compassion, an inexhaustible love that you shared with everyone—your Children, Grandchildren, your friends, and even mere acquaintances. Your second name, Carme, means "song" or "poem" in Latin. It is also linked to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a title given to the Virgin Mary in reference to Mount Carmel in Israel. Your life was a song, sometimes sad, sometimes joyful. Sad, because it was marked by hardships that few could endure—the loss of your children, the illness you bore for much of your life. Joyful, because you also knew how to appreciate the small joys that life had to offer. That song came to an end on the night of February 27, 2025. A page has turned. You took your last breath here, in New Jersey, far from the city and the country where you were born, Gonaïves, Haiti. A branch has broken—the one on which your descendants relied. From now on, they will no longer be able to count on your infinite compassion and boundless generosity. No longer will we be able to admire your radiant smile or hear your comforting laughter. But you will leave behind memories that will never fade. The values and principles you instilled will continue to guide those who love you. Finally, a wall has fallen—the one we leaned on when the harsh winds blew. There will be a before and an after this February 27, 2025. We must come to terms with this reality, even though your absence is painful, for death is the fate of all living beings. Yet, because the hearts of the living are the resting places of the departed, you will remain forever in ours, in the hearts of all those who loved you and whom you loved with a true and profound love.
